WHAT IS A SONG DEMO?
A song demo, commonly called a songwriter demo, can be a simple guitar/vocal or a full band production. It can be produced at a home studio utilizing very basic equipment or recorded in a state-of-the-art facility. Since the object of the recording is to sell the song the emphasis should be on the lyrics and melody. The vocalist is usually ‘out front’ in the mix. The song demo is one of the few ways a songwriter can audition his/her songs to publishers, recording companies and internet listeners. Today, the music demo is more than likely to be in the mp3 format.
You don’t necessarily need a full band but most songs will benefit with at least four or five instruments. Adding extra instruments: background vocals, strings, etc. can greatly enhance the song and therefore your chance of placement.
DO YOU PROMOTE THE SONGS YOU DEMO?
No, we are a recording studio; we are not in the music promotion business. Quite a few of our demo clients have received publishing contracts and a few have received royalty payments but this has been a result of their own promotional efforts.
DO YOU WORK WITH LYRIC WRITERS?
We love working with lyricists. Many of the demos you hear on our sample page are melodies we have provided for the client. Melodies are provided with our regular demo prices at no additional cost.
WHERE CAN I GET INFO ON SONGWRITING?
The internet is a great source for information. Do a google search and a youtube search. Just listening to the radio can be a great source of knowledge. Analyze the hit songs. Play your songs for friends and relatives. Place your songs on the internet. Get feedback from a wide range of people. You’ll know pretty quickly if your songs are ready.
DO I NEED A LEAD SHEET?
Most clients will not need a lead sheet. Years ago it was required for copyright purposes but this is no longer the case. Having a lead sheet is a great way to teach the song to a band or singer. Some publishers and songwriters still prefer to have this service. Sometimes I will recommend a lead sheet if the melody is extra difficult for my singers.
